2018 Update

Jaan does well in school, both socially and in the classroom.  As one of the youngest, she often looks for attention, but at the same time has taken on the role of older sister to our youngest girl, Ganda.  She can bee seen teaching her songs and reading to her.

Warm Heart has provided a safe haven for Jaan in a world of tragedies in her extended family.  Her mother, who had left Jaan and her older sister, Ying Tida with Grandma a few years ago, re-appeared and then died shortly thereafter.  Their father, whom they adore, has been in and out of jail on drug charges.  Grandma and an aunt are a constant and can be reached by phone or come for occasional visits.

Jaan was the beneficiary of the Always Reading Caravan (partner of Warm Heart) preschool in the Akha hilltribe village of Siplan.  She learned her Thai alphabet, ABC’s and basic math before starting kindergarten.  She loves to read and is observant and articulate.  With the safety and stability of Warm Heart, she should be able to excel and create a life as a teacher or other professional that she dreams of.

2016

For lack of a better way of putting it, Jaan is a piece of work.

She arrived at age 5, is now 6 and has not shut for one-minute in between.

She is the first of the children to attend the hill tribe Head Start program in her aunt’s village and knows her Thai alphabet and ABC’s. She is cute as a button and as heavy as a bag of cement. (Brace yourself if you see her coming for a hug!)

She seems to have an endless supply of the most amazing dresses (all clearly hand-me-downs) ever worn at Warm Heart (tops with attached short and tutu like stuff sticking out around the waist).

She is every volunteer’s sweetheart, precocious beyond her years, and an absolute devil at heart. I hope I am retired by the time she is a teenager.
