Archive January 2024 Newsletter

Welcome to our new online newsletter! Our goal is to create a warm and inviting space where you can stay connected with us, delve into our history filled archives, and join us in our ongoing mission of making a positive impact in the world.

We are happy to share some exciting news about our children’s educational progress. The grades are in from the first term, and for the first time since we’ve been measuring, all of them are above the Warm Heart minimum set at 2.5 out of 4.0. All of our high school students and all but three of our middle school students were above 3.0.  The three students were all new to Warm Heart and will soon catch up with our after-school tutors.

What’s even more impressive is that two of our students have secured the top two positions in their classes. This incredible achievement is a testament to their hard work, determination, and the unwavering support they receive from generous contributors like you.

Note: We set the 2.5 level to be clear to the children that we expect them to study well.  We work with each child individually, based on their educational levels when they arrive and any special needs.  Our students know that they have an opportunity to excel and reach for their dreams, with the care and resources at Warm Heart.

A Testament to Dedication

The outstanding performance of our students is a result of their dedication to their studies and learning.    They work together with their after-school teachers and the volunteers we have from around the world. They see the success of our graduates and know that their dedication will open up a bright future.

A Community of Support

At the heart of this success story lies a community that believes in the power of education to transform lives. Your generous contributions and support have made it possible for these students to access quality education and pursue their dreams. It is through your continued assistance that they have the resources and encouragement needed to excel academically.

Celebrating Success

We take immense pride in highlighting the achievements of our students. In particular, we want to acknowledge Nuiy, who secured first place in her 11th-grade class, and Sai, who secured second place in her 12th-grade class. Nuiy is studying languages, including Chinese and Sai is applying to university in the sciences.

Building a Brighter Future

While we celebrate our students’ current successes, we also look toward the future. Our commitment to education goes beyond the classroom, and we are actively working to establish a revolving student assistance fund for higher education. This fund will help bridge the financial gaps that many students face when pursuing higher education, ensuring that they have the support needed to achieve their academic goals.

Continuing the Journey

As we move forward, we remain dedicated to providing opportunities for all children to receive a quality education. Your ongoing support is instrumental in making this vision a reality. Together, we can empower more students to excel academically and build a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities.

The success of our students with GPAs above 3.0 and the achievements of Nuiy and Sai demonstrate the incredible potential that lies within each child when given the opportunity and support they need.

We are grateful for your continued generosity and commitment to our cause. With your help, we are not only celebrating these achievements but also shaping a brighter and more promising future for the next generation.

Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of countless children.

Thank you for being a part of this journey towards educational excellence.

Spotlight

Nuiy is in 11th grade, studying Chinese and English. She dreams of being a teacher or tour guide. Nuiy and her twin sister, Nui, are best friends and keep each other focused on their studies.

They come from a remote mountain hill tribe village where they attended a one room schoolhouse through 6th grade. They are thriving at Warm Heart – each involved in different activities, checking in with our after school tutors when they need help with homework.

They have a good sense of humor and share their happy smiles. They are also great role models for the younger children.

In the heart of our community, a promising initiative is taking shape—one that aims to empower seniors and individuals with disabilities while contributing to environmental sustainability. At its core, this venture centers around the production of worm castings, a valuable organic fertilizer and soil conditioner. We are in the early stages of this endeavor, but the possibilities are boundless if we can provide the necessary support and momentum to our worm project.

Creating Opportunities for Seniors and the Handicap

Our vision is to offer seniors and individuals with disabilities the means to generate an additional income from the comfort of their homes. By cultivating worm farms, they can engage in meaningful work while earning extra income to support their needs. This endeavor not only provides a source of financial stability but also fosters a sense of purpose and independence among our community members.

Contributing to Environmental Sustainability

Beyond the economic benefits, our worm casting project holds significant environmental promise. Worm castings are a natural byproduct of the vermicomposting process, wherein worms transform organic waste into nutrient-rich castings. These castings are an invaluable addition to garden soil, enhancing plant growth and promoting a healthier ecosystem. By engaging in vermicomposting, our participants play a vital role in reducing organic waste and contributing to sustainable composting practices.

As we embark on this journey, we invite you to stay tuned for updates and ways to get involved. Together, we can give “legs” to our worm project, creating opportunities, supporting our community’s most vulnerable members, and contributing to a greener, more sustainable world.

Our Access to Care program is committed to making a positive impact on the lives of individuals with various needs, including those with physical disabilities like Keylo and our cherished elderly members.

Keylo, who has been with us since he was about 6, serves as a reminder of the incredible resilience and determination that can be found in people of all ages. We understand that as our participants grow, their needs may change, and we are here to support them every step of the way.

In addition to helping Keylo find a new wheelchair through our partnership with the Wheelchair Project at the Rajanagarinda Institute of Child Development (RICD), we continue to provide a wide range of services and assistance to ensure that both handicapped and elderly members of our community enjoy the best possible quality of life. Our commitment extends to creating a safe and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive, regardless of their age or physical abilities.”

Our Biochar Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), under the leadership of Pastor Mahamba Wa-ibera Evariste, is seeing a remarkable transformation taking place in the way farmers cook their meals. Thanks to a sustainable and eco-friendly innovation, farmers are now utilizing biochar, a carbon-rich product made from crop waste, as an alternative to traditional cooking fuels like charcoal and wood. This innovative approach not only benefits the environment but also significantly improves the cooking experience for the people of the DRC.

The Biochar Revolution

Biochar, a form of charcoal produced through the controlled combustion of organic materials such as crop residues, is not a new concept. It has been utilized worldwide for its multiple benefits, including improving soil fertility, carbon sequestration, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the DRC is witnessing a unique application of biochar in daily life: cooking.

1. Environmental Impact

One of the primary advantages of using biochar as a cooking fuel is its minimal environmental footprint. Charcoal production from trees leads to deforestation, soil erosion, and increased carbon emissions. In contrast, biochar is created using agricultural waste, which would otherwise be burned or left to decompose, releasing harmful greenhouse gases. By diverting these residues to biochar production, farmers are helping mitigate climate change and preserve their local ecosystems.

2. Economic Benefits

Switching to biochar for cooking has significant economic benefits for farmers in the DRC. Charcoal and wood are costly resources that require continuous purchasing, putting a strain on the limited financial resources of many households. Producing biochar from readily available crop waste is not only cost-effective but also creates an additional source of income for farmers who can sell excess biochar to their communities.

3. Improved Cooking Experience

Beyond its environmental and economic advantages, biochar offers a superior cooking experience. It burns cleanly and efficiently, producing less smoke and ash compared to traditional fuels like charcoal. This means that families cooking with biochar enjoy a healthier living environment with reduced indoor air pollution. Moreover, the consistent and even heat provided by biochar allows for more precise cooking, leading to better-tasting meals.

4. Enhanced Soil Fertility

An often-overlooked benefit of biochar production is its positive impact on soil fertility. Farmers in the DRC who make biochar from crop waste can later incorporate it into their fields, improving soil structure and nutrient retention. This leads to increased crop yields and, ultimately, higher food security for the region.

The adoption of biochar as a cooking fuel in the Democratic Republic of Congo represents a groundbreaking innovation that addresses environmental, economic, and health challenges. By utilizing agricultural waste to create biochar, farmers are reducing their reliance on charcoal and wood, preserving their natural surroundings, and improving their own quality of life.

As the Biochar Revolution continues to spread throughout the DRC, it not only serves as an inspiring example of sustainable innovation but also highlights the potential for similar initiatives worldwide. By harnessing the power of biochar, communities can reduce their carbon footprint, alleviate financial burdens, and cook with greater efficiency and ease. The future of cooking in the DRC and beyond looks brighter and more sustainable thanks to the transformative power of biochar.
