Pokpong is a Lahu boy from the village of Mae Sae Koaw. His parents work as general farm laborers. He is one of eight children with two brothers and five sisters.

Pokpong is crazy about sports, which is good when you are the seventh of eight kids in a really poor house where food is in short supply and it is easy to get pushed aside at the pot.

Recently, Pokpong’s family broke up and he and his youngest brother have been living with their elderly grandmother in the Lahu village of Mae Sai Koaw on the mountain ridge far above Phrao.

Grandma is too poor to send the boys to school so Warm Heart supported them at Tong Roong School.

As a seventh grader, Pokpong moved to Warm Heart.

He is an active member of its Warm Heart football (soccer) team and an avid ping pong player.

He spent the summer break working at Warm Heart on the biochar project and helping around the farm. Some of the money he earned went to help pay for his brother’s school uniforms.

He wants to go to university someday, but for now, he says he’s learning too much to decide.

Recent Report Card

With a strong encouragement, Pokpong completed 9^th grade and started in the vocational track at Phrao High School.

He did not have the confidence to think he could make it to high school and tried to give up a few times.  Some of our older boys as well as staff pushed him to finish his last assignments and he was accepted at the high school.

The term started late, in July, but worked on the biochar production until school started. He seems happy and willing to get his work completed to stay in school. We are delighted that he persevered and has raised his aspirations.

Recent Report Card

C is growing rapidly and is full of energy – ready to help on the farm or other projects, but flies off on one of our bicycles whenever he has a chance.  He is no longer the youngest boy and has taken the new boys, Pon and Aoo under his wing.

As the youngest of the A-B-C team, he still follows his older brothers.  A tends to keep them all out of trouble in spite of their explorations of every nook and cranny at Warm heart.

C started the 4^th grade in July, after a 6 weeks delay due to the COVID lockdown.   “C” completed the 3^rd grade with an excellent 3.7 grade point average.

Michael’s Observations:

It is increasingly difficult to remember that C arrived at Warm Heart malnourished. He was so pathetic – underweight and way too short for his age. Well, no longer. C is big, really big. He is health, strong, bursting with energy and a force to be reckoned with. C is very sharp – he gets great grades in school – and now understands English well, although he will not use it unless all else is lost. PDang (or PJ), our Chief of Staff, has taken A, B and C under his wing. They mix well with PJ’s four boys, with whom PJ speaks in English. All three boys have picked up English just as they picked up Thai when they first arrived. C loves PJ’s attention and has settled in happily as SriPan’s youngest “son.” SriPan is our head housemother who just adopted a two year old daughter. C loves nothing better than taking her for walks, playing with her and feeding her. For a little boy with so much trauma in his past, C is one of the kindest, sweetest kids ever, although you do have to pay attention to that gleam of mischief in his eye!

C is everyone’s baby, a position he has learned to exploit to full advantage. (Why resist?)

And you should have seen him when he was sick. Sooooo pathetic. Ohhh.

Anyway, Junior is flourishing.

He has a long road ahead.

He still has nightmares.

He is still anxious.

He is still clingy.

But the kid is only 6.

A year and a half ago, he was so traumatized he couldn’t talk.

We’ll sort him out.

In the meantime, a great C story.

The other day, NaPan, Warm Heart senior housemother, shows up at our house lugging a huge basket of clean laundry.

C is following along hanging onto the basket.

I ask: “Hey, C, what are you doing?”

He answers: “Helping mom.”

2015 – Journey to Warm Heart

At only 5 years old, C is one of the youngest children at Warm Heart.

C and his older brothers, A and B, arrived at Warm Heart in early 2014 when found wandering in a field by a passerby, who called Warm Heart. Their parents worked far away and left the boys alone for long periods.

This left big brother A as the caregiver for B and C.

Warm Heart helped move the boys to Ton Roong Boarding School where the boys spent the week and then the weekend at Warm Heart. After six months of tracking their progress, Warm Heart decided to bring the boys to Warm Heart full time.

Upon arrival C barely spoke, and even less Thai. C and his brothers are now members of the core “family” of kids who live at Warm Heart year around.

Today

The brothers are thriving at Warm Heart, thanks to after school tutors, diligent House Mothers, and friends at Warm Heart.

C has gone from speaking only Akha to nearly fluent in Thai. He also soaks up English like a sponge any time he hears it.

C’s favorite color is green and he will play any game put in front of him.

C exclaims that at Warm Heart he loves having house moms and staff to take care of and cook for him. His love of the food is apparent- if you watch at meal times C is often running up for seconds and thirds.

He also loves getting treats from P’Lin (Evelind’s Thai name) and the volunteers.

The fact that C is the baby of Warm Heart becomes apparent to any onlooker- every Warm Heart kid treats C like a little brother and every Warm Heart volunteer falls for his smile.

Op is attending Phrao Wittiyakom High School. She’s in the languages tract and is studying English, French and Mandarin Chinese.

She signed up for the Thai Army’s equivalent of ROTC. This will give her a chance for higher education scholarships better access to government jobs after she graduates and finishes her service requirements.

She has been enjoying high school and a recent Chinese visitor said she is doing a good job learning the basics in school.

Naan came to us from our partner school when she graduated from 6th grade. Coming to Warm Heart was a really big deal for her, her family and her whole village. She is the first person in the entire village to go past 6th grade in school!

She is going to go far past 6th grade. This girl is destined for really great things. Now in 10th grade, Naan is an absolutely natural leader. Apart from being a very good student, she is an exceptional athlete and captain of the volleyball team.

When you watch her play, you see the poise and self-confidence of a born athlete, but you also see the ease with which she leads, speaking quietly to her players, handing out pats, supporting nods and high-fives.

She will never lose these leadership skills and no matter what career she finally chooses; they will serve her well. Naan is the sort of child Warm Heart was built for – huge talent needing just the opportunity to shine.

Naan is now a senior in High School.  She finished the second term of 11^th grade and had 9 A’s in total, with a GPA of 3.48.  She continues to earn A’s in most of her subjects, including Thai, Computers, History, English, and Art.  She’s strong in the sciences and is getting extra tutoring in Math.  She continues to excel as an athlete.  The new school year started late, July 1 and she is busy planning for graduation and preparing for college entrance exams.

Recent Report Card

B is finally starting to keep up with his brothers’ growth spurt.  He started out as a picky eater, but now thrives on nutritious meals, including vegetable he helped to grow. He completed 4^th grade with a  strong 3.08 average and started the 5^th grade in July, after a 6 week delay due to the COVID lockdown

Michael’s observations:

B remains the single most curious kid at Warm Heart. He simply cannot sit still in one place watching one thing. He is always in motion, motoring around campus from one activity to another to check out who is doing what.

When asked whether he is not afraid something totally cool will happen at one place while he is visiting the others, he smiles his gap-toothed smile and says, “No.”

The one person B slows down for is his new little sister. B’s “mom,” SriPan, our head housemother, has effectively adopted A, B, and C.

For good measure, she just adopted a little girl, Ayoun, now age 2. The boys all adore her. B lugs her around with him or carefully walks hand in hand with her. He even seems to understand her first efforts at language! B is a perennial favorite among volunteers because of his huge smile and bear hugs.

He loves nothing more that measuring his height against Adjan Shafer’s belly and then expecting to get picked up. He is rapidly becoming way too heavy for anyone to want to pick him up.

Following in the dreams of his big brother, A, B hopes to someday be a policeman.

Attitaya has been very active in our art contests, and has won several times.

2016

Attitaya is now a teenager with all of the accompanying baggage. She is taller than ever, close to 5’ 9” – and very unhappy about it – although she is now, more than ever, runway model material.

She can’t quite figure out being sexy; she will practice hip out poses next to a column – but only when she thinks no one is looking.

Her school work continues to be good, although it is obvious that she could ace everything if she made the effort.

Her core competitiveness remains intact. Attitaya no longer runs every race at Sports Day, but when she can be cajoled into running, she wins. And if you can wiggle a smile out of her (an increasingly difficult task as she becomes a teenager), it is still dazzling.

2015

Journey to Warm Heart

Attitiya is a stunning young girl who hails from the Akha mountain village of Arye.

Arye is too far from the nearest school for children to attend, and Attitiya’s family has two young boys who suffer from hemophilia. As mountain farmers, her parents do not have the income to pay medical bills and support their six children.

The parents asked Warm Heart to take Attitiya and her little sisters Cafe and Pimpisaa.

When Attitiya arrived she was very reserved and knew almost no Thai.

Attitiya and her sisters are now members of the core “family” of kids who live at Warm Heart year around.

Today

Attitiya’s initial reserve has dwindled. Today, she can be seen running around Warm Heart’s campus with her many friends.

She says her favorite part of living at the Children’s Homes is having supportive House Mothers.

One of Attitiya’s hobbies is drawing, but she is also Warm Heart’s best athlete, winning every gold metal in her class at Sports Day.

Her favorite subjects are art and Thai. Her Thai has improved immensely and she is especially proud of her excellent handwriting.

Attitiya admires her school teachers and hopes to one day become a teacher herself.

History

2016

In 2016 we had a flu epidemic run through Warm Heart (fun times!). A was a sickie – but not so sick that he ever stopped worrying about his little brothers, B and C. That is what makes A special. In the year and a half that he has been with us, A has learned a lot of Thai, shed his initial aloofness, joined the boys’ pack and taken to school. But he has never given up being guardian to his brothers. He always has an eye out for them, is there when one of them cries, makes sure they get enough at meals, and shares every treat he gets equally with them. It is impossible to take any of the boys shopping and offer a snack that cannot be divided into three – or be forced by big eyes to get two more for the other brothers!

2015

Journey to Warm Heart

A is a competitive boy and one of Warm Heart’s newest arrivals. A and his two little brothers, conveniently named B and C, came to Warm Heart in early 2014. A young woman noticed the boys wandering around a farm – and, what else, called Warm Heart.

Since arriving at Warm Heart, A has become nearly fluent in Thai and has begun attending the level one English class provided by volunteers.

A’s favorite activities are art and playing football. He also loves to eat and is always going back for seconds.

His favorite color is blue.

Warm Heart Chief of Staff, PJ, says A is very energetic and a hard worker in the field during chores.

One of the greatest things about A is that despite being surrounded by 39 other children you can see how clearly he cares for his little brothers.

Grade: 5th

The school year ended mid-March, just as the COVID 19 lockdown started.

Pim went to her mountain village to stay with her family and came back in June for a July 1 school opening.

The students are wearing masks and have a hybrid schedule the reduces the number of students in a classroom.

The students work with our staff on days when they are home – studying and working in the vegetable gardens.

Pim’s family has been having a tough time with no work during the lockdown and medical bills for her two brothers with chronic diseases.  Attitaya, Cafe and Pim are safely at Warm Heart and studying well.

Pim has had many ear infections and we anticipated surgery on at least one ear if repairs were possible.  She is now 13 and grown to a stage where it is safe and necessary to have the operation to repair her eardrum.  She is scheduled for surgery during the second week of September .

Prior Update

Pim is growing tall and loves to dance with her sisters.  They lead a group of girls that perform to traditional and pop songs.  She is always ready to help and makes sure she has a seat near our after-school teachers to check her homework.

Her health has been more stable, and she has gotten better at keeping her ears clear.  She always has a hug and smile for us and we have high hopes for her.

2016

During a recent flu epidemic at Warm Heart poor Pim got so sick she ended up in the hospital, just the most recent chapter in her long story of medical woes.

We have had Pim in and out of the hospital over and over for serious ear infections. It’s clear that at some earlier point an untreated infection scarred one of her eardrums, leaving her largely deaf in that ear.

That combined with intermittent hearing loss in her good ear when she has infections has made school really tough.

She was kept back last year, which was a real blow, and is struggling now. We are working hard to sort out her medical issues so that we can get to underlying learning disabilities. (What is “dyslexia” in Thai?)

Pim is such an energetic and charismatic child that we will all do anything we can to give her an equal chance.

2015 – Journey to Warm Heart

Pim joined her sisters Café and Attitiya at the Children’s Homes in 2013. The girls are from Arye where another older sister and two brothers still live.

Their parents are laborers currently working on the Royal Project in the reforestation sector in Doi Mon Lan.

Like most of the Akha children Pim knew only the Akha language when she arrived.

Pimp and her sisters are members of the core “family” of kids who live at Warm Heart year around.

Today

Pim’s Thai vocabulary grows daily and she is so happy to have joined her big sisters at Warm Heart. She says she looks up to them and loves getting to spend time with them after school.

She also loves drawing, playing with Evelind’s dogs, and hanging out with the volunteers.

Her favorite part of living at Warm Heart, however, is cooking with Evelind. She loves baking treats and making a mess!

Sarawoot is an interesting young man who is making a lot of progress at Warm Heart. When he arrived, he was an overweight and indolent child with a nasty mouth.

Here, however, he has had to make it within the discipline of the other boys and has done well. He is far less mouthy, having learned that if you mouth off all the time, no one wants to play with you.

Likewise, he has lost a lot of weight and gained a lot of strength and endurance running around with the other boys and playing full-contact soccer every afternoon.

We still worry about his school performance and push him to get the after-school assistance he needs from our tutors. But Sarawoot is still new to what is a much more demanding school and to the problem of being personally responsible for managing homework.

We have high hopes for this young man who is fundamentally a great kid who is learning and growing up fast.

Somphop is Lisu and comes from a village in Chiang Dao. He has a younger brother and sister who are both going to Ton Roong school. His sister, Eujan, is actually also being supported by Warm Heart and starting this year to attend Ton Roong school.

Somphop loves to play football and is always super helpful – whether it’s cooking or cleaning around the house.
