When we started Warm Heart in 2008, we were unsure about a lot of things, but one thing we knew with certainty was that children deserve all the love, kindness, and opportunities that this world has to offer. That belief and conviction is what allowed us to start working 12 years back, and it is what keeps us going.

They are our future, yet too often they are left behind. They bring joy and innocence into our lives, yet too often they are forced to lose both. This year, alone, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented crisis for child rights – a crisis on which we need to act now.

We all need to do better. We all owe them more. They deserve more.

So, today, on World Children’s Day, let’s come together to reimagine a better future for every child. Let’s think about the world we want to create – we need to create – for them. And, let’s vow to not rest till we have built a brighter one where they can reach for the stars without ever needing to think twice.

We would love to buy a brand-new school bus to tote our 45 kids back and forth to school!  But our plans are more realistic.

December 1st is Giving Tuesday. We are launching our School Bus fundraising campaign on this day to leverage the bonus money Global Giving provides in matching funds.

Please help us get the word out on Giving Tuesday by making a personal donation and asking friends to do the same. If you are willing to participate just send an email with “Add Me” to Carol@warmheartfoundation.org and on December 1st she will send you a notice when the campaign is live, it only lasts 24 hours!

We plan on purchasing a flatbed truck in good condition and building out the flatbed with a canopy and seats for passengers. But even a used flatbed and the materials required to convert it to a “Thai” style bus are beyond our means.

We plan to decorate our new “bus” with the names of all the generous hearted people who help make this dream come true for us!

Here on the Warm Heart campus we have handprints on our wall. This design will be added to the bus exterior. Each donor’s name will be added to the handprints of our children.

Warm Heart vehicles – and certainly the new bus – are shared with the local schools for field trips and we coordinate transportation for seniors and disabled, providing them an opportunity to attend local events and be a part of the community.

The more service the bus provides, the more people in Phrao will know how many people benefit from the project you made possible.  Please open your generous heart to this project and all those it supports.

We were absolutely delighted when City Life Magazine published an article about our Peace Now art contest!

We feel the benefits of this activity for the children are multilevel.

When people take the time to look, and vote, it is such a powerful message for the children, that there are people that care about them beyond the boundaries of their world at Warm Heart.

Recently the Thai government has made it a big priority to provide local organic foods to government based organizations such as schools and hospitals. This push is becoming more apparent after Thailand’s decision to increase their footprint in the organic trade sector of Asean.

So, we at Warm Heart volunteered to work with Young Smart Farmer on testing sustainable farming methods to feed large amounts of people during all times of the year.

Young Smart Farmer comes to Warm Heart

Young Smart Farmer Chiang Mai came to Warm Heart to begin a year long test period of sustainable farming. The kids were split into three groups to learn about sustainable farming.

Crop Planning

The first group talked about crop planning. Here they learned it’s important to plant vegetables according to a plan that includes adjustments for the seasons and the relationship of the different plants to each other. Crops need to be rotated to allow the soil to replenish. Different bugs like different crops so mixing them avoids losing several crops to one bug. The lengths of time for the vegetables to mature should also be taken into account so there is a good variety to eat all year. It’s also good to plant their favorite food!

Composting and Fertilizers

The second group focused on soil preparation with bio fertilizer. Here we learned about composting and how to make a natural super fertilizer. Some fertilizers help separate the soil, other fertilizers bring nutrients. We mixed up a pink liquid consisting of shallots, whisked egg, eggshells,  and micronutrients that will sit in the sun until it darkens and decrease the growing period time.

Soil Preparation

The third group got their hands dirty with soil preparation. They turned over the dirt to loosen the soil and added biochar fertilizer. We cleaned up the garden and made sure biochar was equally applied to all the soil. When the seedlings are planted they will have the best chance of growing.

Each group plays a major role in making this test period successful.

There is no Tooth Fairy in rural Northern Thailand to make sure that kids grow up with healthy teeth. Where Warm Heart works, the only dental care available is extraction.

Children get cavities. (What children don’t get cavities?)

The cavities go untreated.

The tooth breaks.

The child gets an infection. The tooth is extracted. This sets in motion a process that generally results in the last tooth coming out in twenty years – age 35.

Imagine that you were gumming your food at 35. Not a pleasant thought, is it?

Unhealthy teeth don’t just harm children’s mouths, they can affect everyday life! Kids with poor oral health, like untreated cavities, often speak and eat less and have a hard time focusing on classwork.

In fact, kids with poor oral health are three times more likely to miss school due to pain caused by cavities. And, kids with infections are more prone to teeth extraction which can lead to an increased risk of losing more and more teeth in the future.

At Warm Heart we want to make sure these kids futures are set up for success with their education and bright a smile!

Operation Tooth Fairy is aimed at doing just that!

Operation Tooth Fairy takes poor kids to the dentist before the trouble begins.

Ironically, there may be no dental care where we are, but 90 kilometers (50 miles) away in Chiang Mai the highest quality, modern dentistry is available, always at a low cost, sometimes at a discount for NGOs (nonprofits) like Warm Heart.

With the goal of getting 50 kids to the dentist for x-rays and cleanings we need extra help. We have started a fundraising campaign just for the purpose of being able to provide needed dental care to the children that live here at Warm Heart.

Getting Ready for When School’s Open

Back to school shopping – Four different uniforms – shirt, pants/skirt, shoes, socks, belt, hat – per child, 45 kids – that’s 180 shirts, 180 skirts/pairs of pants, 180 pairs of shoes, 180 pairs of socks, 180 belts and 180 hats, just for the first week of school!

But kids grow – fast – and wear things out – fast.

They go through three complete sets of everything each year.

And there are knap sacks.

And pencil cases. And all the stuff that goes in pencil cases.

And the notebooks for every subject.

And try this on for size: every kid we graduate from 9th grade – a minor miracle around here – and send to high school adds $1,000 to the budget. When we graduate a young person from high school – a major miracle – and send him/her to university it adds at least $5,000. Success is costly!

So far, we have a 100% graduation rate.

Our mission is to educate our kids for a future free from poverty. School costs are everything to us. They are our mission costs.
